You’ve heard of spring cleaning–but have you heard about SUMMER cleaning? If it’s not a thing, we’re determined to make it one! That’s because while spring might be a great time to air out and purge your home, summer is the perfect time to air out and purge your garage. You know the space–you use it to store all of those things you just might need one day. The trouble is, you leave no room for the family car. Well, it’s time to pull on your work gloves and get down to business: here are just a few garage organizing tips that you can utilize this summer and all year round. Be sure to set aside a full day or even a full weekend to get the job done properly!
Before you get organized, remove everything from the garage. That’s right–clear it out. Your garage should be almost as empty as the day you moved in. That’s because when you have a clear view of the space, you’re much more likely to understand what will work best as you fit everything back inside.
Merge and purge. Our garages are filled with junk. Of course, they may also be storing a few things you can’t be brought to part with, either. Go through EVERYTHING one by one and decide whether or not you want to keep it. If you’re not going to keep it, sort into two piles: trash and giveaway. Can’t decide if you want to keep something? Ask yourself: Do I love it? When was the last time I used it? If I donated this piece, could someone else use it? Clearing clutter is incredibly satisfying, and once you’re left with only the things you need or want most, you’ll start to feel good about this whole “cleaning the garage” business.
Decide what the garage will be used for. Not everyone wants to use their garage to park their car–and that’s perfectly fine. Perhaps the garage is going to be used as a personal studio. Maybe the garage will be where your family enters and leaves the home most frequently. Whatever your need is for the space, you most likely can come up with a unique way to transform it. Install shelving, build drawers, or add shoe racks near the door. A garage is a great space in your home to start from scratch and use your imagination.
Utilize both vertical and ceiling space. Most garages that are stuffed to the gills have both boxes and miscellaneous items all over the floor. It’s time to go through those boxes. Boxes left on the floor of the garage are vulnerable to a whole slew of problems including mice, water damage, and worse. Instead of leaving your bike on the floor, hang it. Do the same thing with tools and hardware. Store golf clubs inside. As much as possible, you should use the space available on your ceiling or garage walls to keep the ground clutter-free and avoid the pitfalls of damage that can occur more easily on the floor.
Label everything. The fact is that it can be difficult to organize absolutely everything. That being said, taking some time to label drawers, shelving, and even toolboxes can be hugely helpful to maintaining organization in the long run in your garage. Tedious? Absolutely. Helpful? You bet!
Your garage can truly be a great space, utilized for almost anything. Rather than storing a bunch of unused junk there, start from scratch! Cleaning your garage is an excellent summer project, and one the whole family can help with. Don't want to do it on a weekend?
